In the Future

Over the years I have constantly changed what to do in the future, at school I wanted to study medicine, then I wanted to be an astronaut, in the higher courses I wanted to study biotechnology, but for some mystical reason, I ended up studying biochemistry, so it is difficult to think about that today, but after meditating a little, in the future, I don't know how many years can pass, but I would like to participate in a scientific position at NASA, because I know that to be an astronaut you have to have many conditions and skills that I don't have, so it would be too much hard.

Although, having a job at NASA would also be difficult, but I think that at some point the opportunity will be given.

On the other hand, what I most hope for in the future is to work in a microbiology laboratory, where I can see different bacteria, viruses and other unicellular bodies, in fact, when I have advanced in the career, I want to specialize in this sector because of my great admiration and the use of these beings.

It may sound very childish, but at no time have I thought if I will really earn an adequate salary with these studies or if it will be all pink, because I feel that if I like and enjoy what I do, I would not complain about it.

I recommend...

The series that I recommend is a “dorama”, that is to say, oriental series, specifically is Korean. It is called “Mr. Sunshine” and was released last year in Netflix; also, it has twenty four episodes with duration of one hour each.

This series was produced by Kim Eun-suk, who I don’t know more production of him, but in this he worked hard with the production, because in the whole series occur in the antique culture of Korea, exactly in 1871, with traditional costumes or the typical oriental atmosphere.

Well, it is about the poor child that kills his family for disobeying to his employers, but the assassins also want to kill him, therefore he flees the country to USA with the help of a missionary. He lives there for a long time until he is transferred to Korea because he was military and knows the language. On the other hand, is a woman of the nobility who struggles to free Korea from the Japanese.

This series, I liked very mucho, because the situations are unexpected and I cried in most episodes because the tension and desperation that I felt, because I had to wait a week for another episode. 

My pet

In a previous blog, I've already talked about it, it's a little yorkshire Terrier called Mia. The next month will be six years old and has been my first pet in life, since I had never had a pet before.

The first time I saw her it was a surprise, I did not know that the reason for the departure was to find Mia. That's why, when they told me it was our pet, I started crying with happiness.

Since that time, she has been part of our family, she usually sleeps with me and snuggles on my back, not caring that I sleep well. Also, when she wants to play, she throws her toy at me and starts jumping and barking so I can pick it up.

Every time we take her out for a walk, she starts barking everything that moves, children, dogs, even the leaves she sees

I love her very much, she is very funny and cute, and when I come from classes, she jumps and licks my face. I hope that Mia is with us for much longer.

The Best Vacations

In Argentina!!!

The best vacations that I had was when I visited Argentina specifically Buenos Aires with my family, that is to say, my mother, father, sister and uncle. Well, it was the first time that I had traveled outside of Chile.

This travel was very interesting and relaxing because we saw very much places and to ate different food of Argentina. There we were a one week, where I visited museums, rivers as ‘Rio Tigre’ or ‘Rio de la Plata’ and a one time, we enter a mall center that, sincerely, was ugly.

Also, the city was clean and there was a good smell. The only bad was the subway, because always it was very hot, although to be cold. It was strange and I thought that we were going down to hell. While we will avoid the subway, I was happy.

On the sixth day, I started to miss my dog; she was very alone in Chile and sometimes, a men visited her, but it not same that I take care of her. When we came back, she was happy and jumped everywhere, it was very cute.

Antarctic

International investigation into Belgium's Antarctic base

The first country that i will wish to go was England, but after of think about this, I like very many locations with cold weather as Antarctica, this is the first reason that I want to go and work in this country. Yeah, it is strange that someone to like a cold place and what has only military bases or the weather is bad always, but I don’t have any more reason for justify.

The Antarctic actually is a continent and is governed by a system known as the Antarctic Treaty system (ATS) with the signatories of the Treaty were 53 countries. The population engaging in and supporting science, in fact this place has a Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research which it is motivated me for I would to work for long time there.

Also, for the cold weather is a perfect pace for working in biological sciences as the microorganisms that I love these studies, especially related with the bacteria.

Experience with the blog

In general, writing blogs for many weeks has given me the experience of trying to tell each event in English, which always had difficulties for me, since thinking in English is complicated, it is not so much listening or reading, if not It’s like that. You must form sentences or sentences to communicate with other people in this language.

At first it was very difficult to express myself in English, since I had to think about placing grammar, verbs and themes better, so the writing was very slow. However, throughout blogs, I tried to process faster how to place each thing. In a way, I have evolved with writing, but I still have a lot to learn.

I don't know, you should add more time to do the practical parts so that you can always better integrate the sentences and be very fluent and have a minimal error in communication.

In a way, you can write about many things, which can vary greatly according to the tastes of each person, since one group wants to narrate a fun event and another group wants to talk about their greatest hobby, so it is very broad of what It can be written.

In conclusion, it has been an entertaining experience

Neurotoxins

Mechanism of tetanus

The tetanus is an obligatory anaerobic bacillus produces neurotoxins that block of neurotransmitter release from spinal inhibitory interneurons, such as glycine and GABA and travel along peripheral nerves to the central nervous system.

This mechanism is very similar with other neurotoxin called botulinum, who inhibit of acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, but the different the tetanus make a spastic paralysis affecting the whole body, as skeletal muscles or can cause cardiac arrhythmias and fluctuations in blood pressure.

As you can see, this infection is one of the most dangerous in the world, because attack many organs from the brain to the muscles. For this reason, it is important for investigate and understand for eliminated or use it in other forms, which it happens with the botulinum neurotoxin that is occupied in the aesthetic companies with purpose of temporarily paralyzing smoothing of facial wrinkles call in the trade “Botox”.

Enjoyable Subject

In the school, I was very boring with the all subjects, as math, history or biology because I didn’t enjoy them. In fact, in the mayor the classes, I was sleeping or reading a book.  The professors never challenged me for my good attitude and notes.

However, in the university I have enjoyed more subjects, I have suffered with some, but in general is better that school.

Now, I enjoy to study physiology, this subject is very funny because I can understand different process that occur in all human, as the mechanism of neurotransmitters or how is the function the ion channels voltage dependent, among others.

At the beginning, the teacher was disagreeable with all students and I don't like them, but presently, I have talked in other situation with her and she is very nice, making me want to go to his class. I haven't had many practical parts, but it would have been pleasurable to see this process.

I think that numbers of all students in the subject are approximately 200 persons, maybe I was wrong, but is difficult know this.

Expert that I admire

There have been many scientists who have caught my attention, for distinct reason as your research, your life, etc. However, the scientist that I find most interesting, in term of his research is Andrew Schuerger, who is a researcher at the astrobiology Institute from NASA.

In short, he started his university studies in 1979, during these years he concentrated on studying microbiology and pathogenic plants. In 2000, he entered his investigation in the NASA that observed the survival, growth in the replication of microorganism.

The study that is focused on those years, and the work that has fascinated me most is, the research that explores the survival capacity of a psychrophilic microorganism, on the surface of Mars using simulated environmental variables including ultraviolet irradiation, desiccation, temperature, atmospheric pressure and dust composition.

I find that his studies on bacteria is incredible, because it gives very important functions to the microorganism that are normally taken as organism that harm humans and this is not always the case, as they make very important processes for the environment and its surrounding.

The favorite Picture

The photograph that I like it until now, is about my dog, she is called Mia, is important because she looked very cute and funny in the pictures.

In this moment, I took the photo quickly, before that my dog get bored and move another place and I couldn´t capture such a scene.

It was taken when she was going to wash. So we, my mom and me, were looking for where she was, because she didn't want to bathe. We look for him everywhere and we didn´t find it, but ironically, we found it inside the bathtub, the event was very funny and entertaining.

Always, I take many pictures about Mia, as when she is doing funny things, I laugh a lot with him. Well, not only me, my family also laughs at these pictures and the things she does in any part of the house or to the places that go out.

My favourite books

Since a long time, I have liked to read book, because my uncle in my birthday, he gave me two books. Later, my mom started to buy me different books. For this reasons, I stared to love reading books.

My favorite books are very many, as “Misery”, “The green mile”, “The Shining” or “Carrie”, all was written for Stephen King, and yes, this man is my favorite writer. His stories are very complex and the reader slowly understand why the protagonist is as bad as Jack Torrance in “The Shining “or very well as Coffey, the black prisoner, in “The green mile”.

If you like the suspense or the terror, this is the best recommendation that I can give. For example, in the “Misery”, the protagonist is Annie Wilkes is a nurse that loves locally a writer, so she decided kidnaps him because he finished bad his novel and Annie forcing him to create a new one, use physical and psychological torture.

My favorite piece of technology

My first computer

My favorite piece of technology that I have used always is the computer, because it has helped me in different activities as read or watches series and also solved problems. Always I have had this gadget, for example in the school, my parents gave me the first computer, it was very small and slow, but I was too happy.




After, again my parents gave me other computer, but it was fast and had great capacity for play the games or makes the homework. For this reason, I used all the time.

I like this object, because anyone can use the distinct forms with it had multiples uses and always comply its function.

 My notebooks had served me in different occasions and have discovered in the many things as read notices or investigations, therefore are important for my carrier and to be informed of everything 

Why did i choose my career?

When i was a child likes me to see the body function and dreamed with help to the people. My parents wanted that me to study medicine, but I never did not like to help to the people this form.

For that reason, i searched more option, the first option was to study biotecnology, but i didnt feel that was mine, the second option was to study biochemistry. Finally, i choosed biochemistry, because I had a path that is microbiology. I think that's how I want to help people, maybe not directly, but that's how it makes me happy.

Actually, i am very lucky for have good person with me. The stress always is present and the despair, however is steps by steps for the future.

I hope will comply this little dream.

My little life

Well, I'm Belén Díaz, in my family we are five, my mother, she is secretary, my father, he is cashier, my sister that she is school student and my lovely dog Mia. 

I born 14 march on 2000 and always i studied in catholic schools, this was very boring cause all liturgy and ceremonies.

But, now I am studying biochemistry in the university of Chile. Fortunally, my new friends are very good persons and I appreciate having known them.

Oh, I like to read a mystery books and listen music, especially music of Queen, they are amazing.
